AW12 / My favourite shows from LFW

I can’t actually comprehend that we’re already in the middle of fashion month – doesn’t it seem like 2 minutes since the SS12 shows? As someone who couldn’t attend any of the events I was invited to (got the full-time job to thank for that!) I feel I was allowed to sulk a little bit but once I’d got over it I couldn’t wait until I had the time to settle down at my laptop with a big mug of tea to catch up.

Historically London was seen (by some) as the scruffy little sister of the fashion family – people even flew straight from New York to mainland Europe, forgoing it entirely. However with a new wave of cool, young designers housed and showing here (current fashion favourite Mary Katrantzou to name just one), London’s image and people’s perception of it is changing.

Here are my favourite shows from the past few days. Which did you love?

Judy’s Vintage Fair: Bethnal Green Social

Judy's Bethnal Green Social Fair, February 2012If you read my previous blog you may remember a post when I raved about the new venture by Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, Judy’s at Spitalfields. After popping to my first Bethnal Green Social on Sunday I thought I’d do another post about these most fabulous of fairs.

Judy’s Socials aim to provide even more than just the usual reasonably-priced vintage clothing, accessories, homewares, art, furniture, records, magazines, and vintage-inspired wares (not forgetting the incredibly friendly traders); there is also live music from performers and DJs, a bar, tea and cake, and space to relax with magazines and board games.

Judy and co. are still touring the UK to bring purse-friendly vintage to the masses and they have lots of events lined up over the next few months. They’re the kind of fairs you just can’t leave without making a couple of little purchases (in this case presents for my Mum’s birthday next month, not pictured obviously!).

Find out more about Judy’s Vintage Fairs.

The BAFTA awards 2012

BAFTA awards 2012 - red carpet

BAFTA awards 2012 - me on the red carpet!

[ Wearing: I.N.K. shirt and Bertie boots via ASOS, Vivienne Westwood Anglomania by Lee jeans via my-wardrobe.com, Topshop coat, J by Jasper Conran collar necklace* ]

I’ve received a few tweets and comments asking when I was going to write this post so I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long, I’ve been so busy all week! I have so much to share about the amazing day I had so hopefully this long post will make up for the wait…

It all started when I received an email from the Charles Worthington team inviting me to report for them from the red carpet at the BAFTA awards. I had to read it 3 times – my brain literally couldn’t compute it. I have to admit I still didn’t think it was really going to happen right up until a couple of days before the main event, when I suddenly began feeling simultaneously wildly excited and extremely nervous. I barely slept the night before!

BAFTA day…

On Sunday morning I headed to the Savoy hotel (a dream in itself) where the Charles Worthington team had set up camp in 2 gorgeous Style Suites and were primping the hair of BAFTA attendees alongside little old me. I was paired with lovely Chloe who, bizarrely, has actually done my hair twice before at the Percy St salon!

Chloe predicted that we’d see a lot of quiffs on the red carpet but knowing what suits me (quiffs elongate my large forehead and round face!) I chose to have my hair in a half-up-half-down messy beehive – all technical terms, obviously – and I absolutely loved the final result. I closely watched what Chloe was doing so I can try to recreate the look at home. Professional tip: when curling your hair make sure you also twist it as you wrap it around the wand/tongs as the curls will last longer!

Post-pampering I was asked if I wanted to meet Charles himself. I hadn’t expected that at all so I was really nervous but I needn’t have been: he was so friendly and it was incredibly kind of him to spare 5 minutes to chat when he must have been so busy. I was being looked after for the day by CW’s lovely digital manager Mareike (isn’t that that prettiest name?) so we then went and had a girly chat over some hot drinks.

Red carpet time!

Before I knew it the time had come for us to gather at the friends and family entrance to the BAFTA red carpet. I had no idea what to expect but I’d been told to wrap up warm as we’d be outside for the rest of the evening – it wasn’t so bad at first but the temperature quickly dropped so I was glad of the advice!

If you’ve ever tried to use a touchscreen phone while wearing gloves you’ll appreciate that I struggled to tweet/write on the Charles Worthington Facebook page (I’d stupidly not thought to bring my Etre Touchy gloves) so I ended up just poking my thumbs out of my gloves!

The list of celebrities in attendance was ridiculous – a who’s who of Hollywood. I swooned over George Clooney and Brad Pitt (who both spent at least an hour working the red carpet and saying hello to everyone despite the cold, so charming) and got starry-eyed over Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham-Carter, Tim Burton, James Cameron, Dame Judi Dench, Jean Dujardin and Daniel Radcliffe (oh yes, Harry Potter!).

The Charles Worthington team had styled the hair of Emilia Fox and Jessica Brown-Findlay (amongst others): they’d both gone for really different looks, sporting 1940s-style waves and a high ballerina bun respectively. Emilia’s tumbling tresses were my favourite ‘do of the whole night and her new red colour looks absolutely perfect on her.  There’s a simple 1940s waves how-to on the Charles Worthington website if you want to give it a go yourself.

Same again next year?

So there you have it!

Sorry for rambling on so much but it was such a fantastic day I just didn’t know which bits to leave out! I do hope you enjoyed my tweets on the night itself and liked reading a bit more about my experience here. For more photos see my Facebook page and/or take a peek at my Instagram feed.

Thank you so much to the Charles Worthington for asking me to be a part of this, and hey, if you need someone to report for you next year… ;)

Happy Valentines Day!

Louis Armstrong “When You’re Smiling”

I woke up feeling all cynical about this ‘Hallmark holiday’ (which is admittedly unlike me as usually anything soppy/romantic is right up my street), but after spending the day around colleagues exclaiming “happy love day!” every time they speak to someone new and buying treats for the rest of the office just because it’s Valentine’s Day I’ve been won over again.

I still don’t like the thought of today being set aside specifically for people to show their loved ones how much they mean to them: in my opinion you should do that every single day.

Chris and I are sticking on a suitably cheesy DVD (which we’re already bickering about) and had planned to feast on M&S’s famed dine-in deal but seeing as the stores we tried had sold out of what we wanted we’re having an old favourite, fajitas, which is oddly fitting as we lived off them when we first met as poor students.

What are your plans for this evening?
